Winter Fireplace Safety Tips

Now that we’ve settled into the midst of winter and are cozily snuggling up around our fireplaces, it’s a good idea to follow a few simple tips to help prevent chimney fires and maintain a safe environment for you and your family.

Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually. Hire a trustworthy, recommended chimney sweep to remove soot and debris and to inspect your fireplace for any issues, such as loose bricks or missing mortar.

Burn only firewood. Scraps from construction, trash, debris, painted wood, or treated wood can release chemicals into your home that are harmful to inhale.

Burn only dry, cured wood. This means logs of dense wood that have been split, stacked, and dried for at least eight months. Avoid using soft or moist wood.

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure that your home has smoke detectors on every floor and near the bedrooms. Check periodically to see that the batteries are working properly.

Clear Area. Consistently check to ensure that the area surrounding the fireplace, including the mantel and hearth, are clear of any décor, debris, or combustible items. Purchase a nonflammable rug to put in front of the fireplace in case sparks fly out.

Put Out Fire When Absent. Do not leave a fire unattended. Put it out when you are leaving the house or going to sleep for the night.

Install a Chimney Cap. Your chimney sweep can install a stainless steel chimney cap on top to keep rain, ice, snow, animals, and other unwanted objects out of your chimney and to prevent the accumulation of debris, which can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide that flows into the house. If you have a cap, your chimney sweep can inspect it and make any necessary repairs.

Build the Fire Slowly. To burn safely, build the fire slowly and increase the amount of wood as it heats up.

Shield the Fireplace. Put a shield, such as a glass grate, around the fireplace to prevent sparks from flying out.

Practice Child Safety. Do not let children play near the fire or play with the fireplace tools. Consider purchasing a gate to put around the fireplace if you have small children.

Thank you, Bob, for making your schedule work to get Stephanie's chimney repair finished while I was in Charlotte. What a super trio of guys you three are! Thanks again.

Hello Bob, Thank you so much for a very helpful consultation! Brian and I enjoyed learning about our fireplace and out options. We appreciate your thorough inspection and sharing of you knowledge! Take care.

We purchased our home in Belmont and it had a very nice wood burning fireplace that needed some work. I called several other companies but once I spoke to Bob I could tell he had many years of experience and knew exactly how to advise me. He let me ask as many questions as I wanted and explained the work that needed to be done. The project was completed in the time-frame he said and within the estimated price he provided. I would recommend him to anyone I know.

When I called [Bob] it was obvious he has many years or experience with Fireplaces and Chimneys. I like that he took the time to answer the questions and to explain the situation and options I needed for my fireplace. I called three other companies before him and each one gave misinformation and didn't want to take the time to explain and teach me so I could make an educated decision. Instead they just wanted to sell me something I didn't need. I never knew there were so many intricacies to the business but now know exactly who to call to get my questions answered and get the best service at a fair price! I'm so lucky I found him before choosing one of the other guys.

Called Bob and he was able to come out in 2 days. He showed up on time and was very professional (even letting me know when he was 30 minutes out). He looked at the fireplace and made the recommendation for repair with some estimated pricing. So right there on the spot he helped me walked through the decision process on what would fix the issue. I was VERY happy with his knowledge and felt like I could trust him to give me the right advice and not just try to sell me something. Thanks Bob!
